Adoption Process

So You Want To Adopt Your New Best Friend

The SPCA of Southwest Michigan will consider adoptive families in and outside the Kalamazoo area. We do not “ship” our animals to any location. All adoptions are done In-House. Our goal is to make the best rescue match taking into consideration the dog or cat's background and your family's needs. Every dog or cat is different: personality, temperament, energy, comfort with kids and other animals, medical needs and more. We take all these factors into consideration when making a furever-home match. We are very careful about the placements we make. We do our best to match the right dog or cat with the right adoptive home because we want this to be the pet's permanent home.

If you are willing to wait for the right animal to be matched to you, you are an ideal candidate for SPCA of South West Michigan. As our success rate proves, these precious dogs and cats are well worth the wait.

OUR PROCESS

01

You come visit our shelter and will be greeted by one of our amazing staff. They will ask are you interested in adopting a dog/cat? You will be given instructions about visiting the Dog Kennel and Cat City areas – please be mindful to follow the instructions as they are for your safety.

02

Once you have found your pet of interest, we will put you in one of our Adoption Rooms, provide all the information we have on that particular pet so you can make a well-informed decision and give you time to be with them. We recommend that you do this first BEFORE bringing your dog with you, but we understand certain situations will not always allow this.

Meet N’ Greet →

03

If you brought your dog with you, you can leave them in the office with us while you visit the shelter dog. We do not do meet and greets with cats and puppies with your home dog – only with adult dogs. Once you feel the shelter dog is a good fit then we can do a Meet N’ Greet with your home dog (if applicable) with the adult Shelter Dog.

If everything goes well, then we have you fill out the adoption contract, pay the adoption fee (check, cash, or card) and they go home with you immediately.
