Adopt a rescued
pet from
SPCA of Southwest
Michigan
We
are a volunteer-led organization dedicated to the rescue,
rehabilitation, and
responsible adoption of homeless pets. We rescue
more than
90 percent of our homeless pets from ten Southwest and South Central
Michigan pounds. Once safely in our care, we restore
our
pets to health, treating a wide variety of medical
problems. All our pets are sterilized and brought up
to date
on required vaccinations. When ready, we place our
pets in
responsible and caring homes, using an effective screening process. The SPCA of Southwest Michigan is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit animal welfare organization. We receive no public funding. Our operating budget derives from private donations and the service fees we charge at the time of adoption. Over the years, we have begged and borrowed to provide the critical shelter space that has driven our growth. We began operating in the Spring of 2002 in an unheated barn on private property in South Portage, operating only in the warm weather months. When winter came, we installed a portable heater to continue to rescue pets. After a short stint in another, much more comfortable private kennel space in 2005, we leased a former bagel factory in Kalamazoo beginning in April, 2006, at 219 Peekstock Drive. We operated out of this until January 2010. But this facility was fraught with problems—primarily in the lack of floor drains and in poor ventilation, both of which contribute to the transmission of disease. We therefore launched a capital campaign to build a new shelter in January 2008. Our new pet rescue center at 6955 West KL Avenue in Oshtemo Township is now open and serving the Southwest Michigan community. The campaign to finance this building project is ongoing. We have seen strong adoption results over the last eight years, with a cumulative total of 8,731 adoptions as of December 31, 2009:
The SPCA of Southwest Michigan is one of the largest and most productive pet rescue organizations in the State of Michigan. |
